CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Seonghwa was a member and later captain of his high school dance team “Diledante” (딜레당트). Seonghwa originally had dreams of becoming a rapper, but at the audition he was told to sing instead. Seonghwa sang “Empty” by WINNER at the audition and became accepted as a vocal position.
In December 2016, Seonghwa became a trainee at KQ Entertainment after he had taken the Korean SATs (수능) and got accepted to Paekchae Institute of the Arts as a dance major. He soon had to drop out because of his schedule as a trainee.
In 2017, Seonghwa participated in the preliminary auditions for the survival audition program produced by YG Entertainment, MIX NINE, but did not make it past the audition rounds.
Seonghwa was a trainee for a little less than two years before his debut.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2018, Seonghwa debuted as a member of ATEEZ, an 8-member group under KQ Entertainment, with Hongjoong, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho. Upon debut, he received attention for his unique visual, deep voice and facial expressions for stages such as “HALA HALA.”
In 2021, Seonghwa made his acting debut on the KBS2 drama Imitation, as a member of a fictional K-Pop boy group.
POSITIONS
VOCAL
Seonghwa has a distinctive vocal tone which usually shines better in mid- to low register. He has also been praised for his falsetto for more sentimental tracks. Seonghwa has been praised for his stable live vocals, and also as one of the most improved vocalist in ATEEZ since debut.
RAP
Even though Seonghwa is part of ATEEZ’s vocal line, he initially auditioned as a rapper when he became a trainee of KQ Entertainment. When Mingi was taking a break from group activities for a year, Seonghwa was the one who filled in for most of Mingi’s rap verses on stage. Seonghwa has also shown his rapping skills on tracks such as “MATZ” and “BOUNCY.”
DANCE
Even though Seonghwa is not part of ATEEZ’s dance line, his dancing skills have been generally praised. He has a powerful and passionate style of dancing which, coupled with his trademark facial expressions on stage (most notably for song such as “HALAZIA” and “Guerilla”) makes for strong stage presence.
