CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Jungwon had originally been training to become a professional taekwondo athelete, but had been reconsidering his career when he was cast on the street by a casting manager from SM Entertainment. He officially became a trainee of SM Entertainment in 2017.
Jungwon had a friend who was a trainee in Bighit Entertainment. His mother showed Jungwon’s photo to a Bighit Entertainment casting manager, leading to Jungwon being cast by Bighit Entertainment in October 2018. Jungwon auditioned at Bighit Entertainment and officially became a trainee there. In 2020, around 3 months before I-LAND began airing, Jungwon moved to BELIFT LAB, a joint venture by CJ ENM and Bighit Entertainment at the time.
In June 2020, Jungwon was one of the 24 trainees to appear on the survival audition program I-LAND, co-produced by CJ E&M and HYBE. He became one of the 7 finalists to debut as ENHYPEN, coming in first place by earning more than 1.4 million votes.
Jungwon trained for almost 3 years before his debut, and spent a year and four months as a trainee of Bighit Entertainment.
AFTER DEBUT
In 2020, Jungwon debuted as the leader of ENHYPEN, a 7-member group under BELIFT LAB, with Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki. Jungwon’s debut was met with high anticipation from the fans as he had come in first place in I-LAND and earned the position of leader despite being one of the younger members in ENHYPEN.
In 2022, Jungwon was a radio DJ on EBS FM radio with Sunoo on a program called Listen by ENHYPEN from February 20th to June 26th.
POSITIONS
LEADER
Contrary to convention in most K-Pop groups where the oldest or one of the older members take on the position of leader, Jungwon is the second youngest member in ENHYPEN despite being the official leader of the group. ENHYPEN had approximately 40 days of discussion on who should be elected as the leader, with Jungwon and Heeseung (the oldest member) being considered as the two main candidates. At the end of the discussion, Heeseung refused taking on the position of leader.
Jungwon was 16 years old at his time of debut as the leader of ENHYPEN. He is the youngest leader of all K-Pop idol groups thus far. Despite being younger, the other members have said that he has high standards and can be quite strict when it comes to group practices.
VOCAL
Jungwon has been generally praised for his vocals since his pre-debut days on I-LAND, especially for his vocal stability and wide range. His vocals especially shine in mid- to high-range. Jungwon is noted for his distinctive vocal tone, and often gets the most recognizable chorus lines from ENHYPEN’s title tracks such as “Given-Taken” and “Drunk-Dazed.”
DANCE
Jungwon has been praised for his power control and crisp popping movements when he dances. Jungwon is especially noted for his shoulder control, seen in choreographies such as “ParadoXXX Invasion.” On episode 5 of I-LAND, he was one of the members and the center of the dance unit, and his performance in the cover stage of the mashup of “Rainism,” “Three Dopeboyz,” and “One of a Kind” went viral.
