CAREER SUMMARY
PRE-DEBUT
Jang Wonyoung was born in Seoul, South Korea. She spent some time in the US (Atlanta) when she was young, during an unspecified period of time. When she was in the sixth grade, Jang Wonyoung went to her older sister’s middle school graduation ceremony, where she was scouted by a Starship Casting manager and ultimately became a trainee.
In April of 2018, Jang Wonyoung appeared in an ad / collaboration music video for “LOVE IT LIVE IT” by YDPP and Pepsi. Jang Wonyoung trained for 1 year and 2 months before she became a participant in the MNET survival audition program, Produce 48, in 2018.
AFTER DEBUT
On October 29th, 2018, Jang Wonyoung became one of the final 12 participants to debut as IZ*ONE, a project group under the management of CJ ENM, along with her now-bandmate An Yujin. Jang Wonyoung ranked 1st place and got the official place of “center.” The project group was active until April 29th, 2021, releasing 4 mini albums and a full-length album in Korean, three single albums and a full-length album in Japanese.
In the December of 2021, Jang Wonyoung re-debuted as a member of IVE, a 6-member group under Starship Entertainment, with An Yujin, Gaeul, Rei, Liz, and Leeseo with “ELEVEN.” Jang Wonyoung already had had a sizable fandom and mainstream recognition from her activities as IZ*ONE, and received a lot of attention for her visuals and stage presence.
Jang Wonyoung quickly established herself as the “it-girl” of the 4th generation of K-Pop, becoming brand ambassadors for many brands, including Miu Miu, Innisfree, SK Telecom, and more. She was also the fastest 4th generation girl group member to gain 10 million followers on instagram. In 2023, Jang Wonyoung received the Asia Celebrity award at the 2023 Asia Artist Awards, being nominated alongside NewJeans and LE SSERAFIM.
Jang Wonyoung was an official MC of Music Bank from October 2021 to January 2023. She has been a main MC for many award shows and music festivals such as the 2021, 2022, and 2023 Asia Artist Awards and 2023 KCON LA.
POSITIONS
Even though there are no official positions within IVE, Jang Wonyoung is unanimously considered as the center of IVE. She was in the center position all of IVE’s performance stages for the title tracks and b-side tracks. In group photos, Jang Wonyoung is always in the center with the other “visual line” member, An Yujin.
Even outside of the group, Jang Wonyoung is called “the center” in various news and social media, as she’s considered to be the “identity member” (정체성 멤버) of IVE and one of the most representative girl group centers of all time.
VOCAL
Jang Wonyoung’s vocal color is distinctive and could be easily recognized for its girlish, fair tones. During her IZ*ONE days, it has been pointed out that her voice often sounded nasal, especially in the higher notes. However, she changed her nasal way of singing (often called her “baby voice”) after re-debuting as IVE. Her lower register has been generally better received. Even though she’s not regarded as the “vocal line” of IVE, Jang Wonyoung receives longer lines as she is in the center position.
In “LOVE DIVE” and “After LIKE,” Jang Wonyoung sang the most parts, even more than the vocal line members (An Yujin and Liz). In “I AM” and “Kitsch,” she sang the first verses in the lower register, which was praised for her execution.
DANCE
As the tallest member of IVE along with An Yujin, her execution of IVE’s choreographies, especially the “key choreo” or the “killing parts,” often went viral. Her exceptionally slender frame also makes the dance moves stand out, such as the dance breaks on the floor for songs such as “LOVE DIVE” and “ELEVEN.” Her dance style has been called fluid, feminine, and softer compared to some of the members of the group.
Jang Wonyoung is often in the “center” position for many of the beginning and end formations for IVE title tracks and b-sides. Her stage presence and facial expressions have been called one of the standouts in the 4th generation K-Pop girl groups, representative of the IVE’s overarching “narcissistic” concept.
